Consider Waste Reduction a Personal Challenge

Saving the Earth begins in the home. Every person has the power to benefit the planet by developing more responsible habits. The amount of rubbish each individual or family produces is a large part of where resources are wasted. Reducing how much is used and recycling more are two steps that are easy to make. Every household can slowly improve their behaviors at their own pace. Here are some basic ideas to help everyone get started.

  • Avoid purchasing pre-packaged, prepared foods. Home cooked meals create much less waste.
  • Invest in reusable containers. Avoid one-time use bags and plastic wrap for lunches and leftovers.
  • Find safe and unique ways to reuse items instead of throwing them out.
  • Donate or sell unwanted items that still have some use left. Charities exist that take unwanted shoes, eyeglasses and clothing and toys.
  • Go paperless. Pay bills online, purchase online subscriptions to magazines and newspapers and type grocery lists into a smartphone. Use a small whiteboard or chalkboard for family messages and reminders.
  • Buy only minimally packaged items and choose products made from recycled materials.
  • Compost yard and food waste. It is good for the garden and it will save space in garbage bins.
  • Learn to do some basic sewing and mechanical and household repairs rather than just replacing an item.
  • Learn to go without things occasionally or to use less of certain consumable items.

There is no way for any modern family to ever reach the point where they have absolutely no waste. However, nearly every household can make a few changes and reduce what they throw out. Set specific goals, such as not purchasing anything for one week each month or having one less bag or can of rubbish every week. Treat it as a family competition to see who can come up with more conservation ideas to try or who creates the least amount of waste each week. Finally, always choose an environmentally responsible company to help with refuse removal. Their processes should be designed to focus more on recycling than just disposal.
